Fort Pierce, Florida is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 11,992 at the 2010 census. Fort Pierce is part of theMiami-Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood metropolitan area and is included in the Miami–Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach Combined Statistical Area. It lies on the southern coast ofbroward county and is bordered by Everglades National Park to the east and north; Boca Raton to the west; and Homestead to the south. The history of Fort Pierce began with Spanish exploration in 1565 when they established a trading post on what is now known as State Road 7 near where present day US 1 meets CR 7. After several failed attempts by Spanish soldiers under Captain Diego Rivera y Torres to establish a permanent fortification here, Isidro Ortiz founded San Pedro de la Guardia (later called Fort Pierce) on July 22, 1663 with seventy men under his command. On December 17, 1664 Ortiz surrendered at this site after a 41 days siege by English forces led by Colonel John Smith of Virginia under orders from King Charles II of England. The fortifications were abandoned after only three months due to lack of food and fuel supplies shortages caused by bad weather during winter season in that year's Cape May Campaign against French forces commanded by General Hendrick Visconti on behalf of English king Charles II. In 1739 Father Francisco Gomez started construction on what would become Notre Dame de la Garde Missionary Church which today stands across from modern day Ft Pierce Municipal Airport just off US 1 between mile marker 21st & 24th Streets eastbound or mile marker 26th & 28th Streets westbound . Construction stopped for lack of funds but resumed in 1741 when Father Gomez had new funding secured from Spain through an agreement made with James Kapp who had been commissioned as Commissioner for Indian Affairs under George Washington’s presidency In 1744 Father Gomez again stopped construction due to lack of money but resumed it two years later when he received help from Asahel Westfall who had also been commissioned as commissioner for Indian Affairs during George Washington’s presidency However these efforts met with success and soon Fort Pierce was being called “the most important place among them all” because it was located on an important trade route connecting Havana Cuba with Pensacola Alabama ..... In 1813 Commodore John Campbell decided that Pensacola should be taken over as the permanent capital city so he ordered Major Pierre Richard Coutelet du Pont developed plans for a fortress here which became known as "Camp Columbia" After much effort including building 3 masts/tower onto an existing sandbank adjacent to current day Port Canaveral Naval Station DuPont finally completed construction begun November 6 1814 , continued until March 20 1815 Siege failed resulting in loss for French Navy ..... By 1819 privateer Manuel Diaz acquired land adjacent to present day Ft Pierce Naval Station which became known as "Diaz's Harbor" ......... In 1830 Jacksonville was founded about 25 miles south along I-95 exit 53A bypassing Ft Pierce ...... In 1898 local businessmen organized what became known as "The First National Bank" ............ In 1907 St Petersburg annexed Ft Pinecrest ..........In 1912 merged into newly created Tampa Bay Regional Council ............... By 1945 there were 10 000 residents .............. Today there are 11 000 residents
