After the war ended, Fort Pierce slowly regained its former prosperity as a commercial center and remained an important military installation until 1964 when it was closed down due to lack of funding. Today only traces of the original fort remain; however, visitors can still access the Fortress Trail that leads around it from downtown Fort Pierce.
