The Fort Pierce gun lights were a series of metal detectors and lighted signs that was placed at various locations in the city of Fort Pierce, Florida during the early 1900s. The gunsights were used to deter crime and provide illumination while enforcement officers conducted their activities. The first gun lights were erected in 1903 at the corner of US 1 and Yorktown Boulevard. The signs were originally operated by the City Marshal’s office, but began to be used by the police department in 1911. The gunsights became more prevalent after World War I when military personnel stationed in Fort Pierce began using them as night vision devices. In 1916, the City Council passed ordinances regulating the use of gun lights within city limits. These ordinances restricted their use to specific areas such as commercial districts, public squares, and public buildings. Afterward, they continued to be used sporadically until 1942 when they were finally discontinued due to lack of funding.

Fort Pierce, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 68,648 at the 2010 census. Fort Pierce is located on the southwestern coast of Miami-Dade County and is bordered by the Miami metropolitan area to the east and north, Palm Beach County to the west and south, and Jupiter Island to the northwest. In 1821 Seminole Indians attacked Spanish forces occupying Pensacola; General José Martí then ordered his army led by Colonel Fernando Rivera to besiege Spanish Fort Mártires which was successfully defended by its garrison of 350 riflemen and 30 cannons against an Indian force numbering 3200 warriors including war chiefs Tocobaga and Timucua; this victory made him military governor of Florida for about two years until he resigned due to ill health on 4 November 1823 because he could not control Native attacks on white settlers. Guns were first developed in the early nineteenth century. The first guns used a light to help aim them and were known as pistols. In 1857, John Browning designed the first effective rifle using an breech-loading system that allowed for reloading without having to remove the entire barrel. In 1892, a US Patent #4,898, was issued to John F. Stevens for his invention of the first permanently illuminated gun light. This device consisted of an evacuated tube (the “lamp”) mounted on a pedestal that sat in front of the firearm. The tube was filled with powder and blackpowder and heated by an electric current passing through it. When the current reached the lamp, it caused a spark which in turn started a fire in the cartridge case held within the lamp.
Fort Pierce was founded in 1837 by the Florida Company as a fur trading post on the east coast of Florida. The fort served as a base of operations for exploration and trade until it was abandoned in 1845. In 1847, Fort Pierce was renamed Fort Godfrey after Rear Admiral George Godfrey, an Englishman who had served in the American Revolution and then joined the British navy during the War of Independence. The fort remained active until it was decommissioned in 1893. The history of Fort Pierce began with its establishment as a fur trading post on the east coast of Florida. In 1837, traders from Canada andthe United States met at Fort Godfrey to discuss Trading Post Agreement #1, which created a fur trading monopoly for both countries in the Gulf of Mexico region. After two years of negotiations, no agreements were reached and hostilities began between America and Great Britain over control of this lucrative market. In 1840, Commodore James Akins laid out plans for what would become today’s Fort Pierce when he established Flounder Key on Jupiter Island to serve as a naval base for Indian fishing fleets operating off northernFlorida’s coasts. Construction commenced in early 1841 but due to financial difficulties, Akins abandoned his plans soon after completion. By late 1840, only fourteen acres (49 hectares) had been clearance cleared along Jupiter Island – less than half the size that would be needed to create an effective military installation capable of handling large numbers of men and supplies ashore. In response to this situation, Captain John Lubbock ordered Major General Thomas Moultrie to establish Flagler County Commandery No 2 at Pensacola on September 10th 1840 under orders from President James K Polk “to provide means by which our citizens can protect themselves against any attempt by those inhabiting Spanish territory or territories under Mexican sovereignty to enter into communication with us or interfere with our commercial interests” Flagler County Commandery No 2 became operational on October 1st 1840 with Captain Samuel Dennett commanding its forces In July 1861 Jacksonville attacked Mobile without warning; King George I declared martial law throughout Florida; all shipping within twenty miles of Jacksonville must stop; blockade runners were hunted down and captured; cotton exports increased; ports closed including St Petersburg On December 8th 1861 Confederate General Braxton Bragg attacked FtGordon although outnumbered 3-1 On December 9th 1861 Confederate General Robert E Lee led an attack against FtGordon resulting in heavy losses for both sidesAlthough outnumbered 3-1 , Confederate General Braxton Bragg managed to capture several cannons while breaking through Union lines near present day Miami Beach
Fort Pierce was founded in 1836 by Captain James Wilkinson, who named it after his home town of Portsmouth, England. The fort was built to protect the Florida Keys from Spanish pirates and became a major trading post on the seacoast. It served as a military base during the Seminole War and later played an important role in American expansionism. In 1924, Fort Pierce was renamed Fort Pierce Naval Air Station after Rear Admiral John S. McCain, commander of USS Enterprise (CV-6) during World War II. The station was closed in 1972 and is now used as a military training ground.
