Gun barrels have a long and varied history in Fort Pierce, Florida. The first guns used in the area were crude muzzle loading pistols, which were made from hickory boards and other materials. In 1838, the Spanish King Don Carlos III granted fortification to the town of Fort Pierce, and began construction of a military arsenal. This new fortifications included two large cannon batteries, one at the north end of town and another on an east-west axis across the river. In 1846, there was a major gun battle between American forces and Mexican troops at San Nicolas de la Vega. This engagement resulted in over twenty Americans being killed while two Mexicans were captured. The following year saw yet another gun battle when American forces attacked Mexican troops stationed at Matlaca Creek. This battle resulted in three Americans being killed and five Mexicans takenprisoner. By 1851, Fort Pierce had become firmly established as a base for American operations in south central Florida. During this time, different types of guns were tried out for use within the fortifications including muzzleloaders, percussion rifles, shotguns (including 12 gauge), artillery pieces (such as cannons) and even flamethrowers! It is interesting to note that all of these weapons were eventually replaced by modern firearms during World War II when Fort Pierce became home to both Naval Weapons Station Plant 4 (later Naval Shipbuilding Command) and Naval Air Station Miramar (later NAS Miramar). Spain regained control of this area following its victory over France in 1814 but sold it back to Great Britain at Tocobaga Creek near present-day Fernandina Beach on November 7, 1815; under British rule until Indian Territory became part of Indiana Territory when Florida gained statehood on August 29, 1907. Construction began on what is now Fort Pierce Navy Yard on December 12th Trafalgar Square had been christened by King George III with cannons mounted along one side sheathing all around her deck amidships — “the flagship and last great fortress” - symbolizing English naval power throughout much of South America which included Cuba and Puerto Rico before their incorporation into the United States as U.S..
