The first fort built in this area was called Fort Armstrong, which was constructed by Captain Armstrong on his return from his explorations. This fort served as a trading post until 1849 when it became known asFort Pierce. In 1861, Florida became part of the Union during the American Civil War and ammunition became an important commodity due to Confederate threats to attack Union installations if they did not purchase large quantities of supplies. By 1865, Fort Pierce had become one of several Union posts along Florida’s east coast. The following year saw significant production at Fort Pierce munitions factories due to Confederate efforts to produce munitions for war purposes inland. The first permanent structure built in Fort Pierce were two rifle ranges which were completed in 1929 and 1930 respectively; these ranges were used for training troops for World War II service out of Coral Gables Army Air Base nearby (now Plantation Air National Guard Base). A few months after they opened, both ranges closed due to low usage but they reopened shortly afterwards under new management as the "Fort Pierce Rifle Range & Pistol Club". This club continued operation until their closure in 1984 because they did not meet all state regulations governing gun range operations; however, since their closure no other NRA affiliated ranges have Opened up within miles radius of Fort Pierce making it one of only 2 cities with this distinction! The second permanent structure erected by Captain Harry Bradford & Captain Leroy J. Chappell was a tennis court which opened on December 2nd 1931; this court functioned as a primary learning resource for students from nearby schools including Bishop Kearny High School which is now known as Chatman Hall! This court also doubled as an exhibition ground for local talent such as Jackie Gleason who made his theatrical debut at this facility before going on to star in Broadway productions throughout most of the 1940s! Fort Pierce, Florida is a town in Martin County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. Fort Pierce was founded in 1845 by Captain John Stonington and his men as a stop on their journey from Pensacola to Tampa. It became an important seaport for trading with Native Americans and the Spanish during the early 19th century. In 1855, Fort Pierce became part of the Seminole Nation and its residents were allowed to keep their Indian titles but were not allowed to vote or own land. The fort surrendered in 1898 after a series of skirmishes with American forces led by General Mariano Rivera. The city of Fort Pierce began developing in the late 1800s as a result of trade with Miami and other South Florida cities. By 1915, it had reached its current size having annexed portions of neighboring Porto Rico and Clearwater Beach. During World War II, Fort Pierce played an important role as one of three U.S military bases in Southwest Florida; it housed more than 2 million troops while providing them with food and shelter during the war effort.
