Since the turn of the century, Fort Pierce has been home to a number of ammunition plants. The first plant was established in 1903 by George W. Smith and it manufactured artillery shells and rifle bullets. It was later moved to its current site in 1927. At that time, the plant produced up to 1 million rounds per day. In 1963, when Fort Pierce became a military base, production stopped and all ammunition was diverted to other facilities within the base. Ammunition production recommenced in 1984 but ceased again in 1990 due to budget cuts at Army bases nationwide. As of 2011,Fort Pierce still produces a limited amount of ammo for military use but is also home to two local gun shops which offer Reloading supplies as well as Ammo Rifles In 1953 FtPierce had one of Florida's first private schools for children with special needs - Yorkhill School for Children with Autism (now known as "The Gabriel School"). From 1973-1981 FtPierce hosted an annual international air show called AirVenture which drew over 100,000 people from around the world each year! In 1836 Governor Manuel López de Santa Anna established a military post at Fort Pearce (later renamed Hurricane Point) as part of an effort to secure key access to sugarcane fields around Tampa Bay from Seminole Chief Osceola's Confederacy forces besieging Tampa Bay. After General Antonio Lopez y Mora relieved General Félix Villeda y Hermosillo De la Vega at Pensacola Beach on November 3, 1836, Santa Anna ordered his men to build stockades along both banks of Hillsborough River between present day Westfield Drive and East Pine Avenue in what is now downtown Ft. Pierce; today only a few foundations remain from this period of history. On December 12th, 1836 Manuel López granted title to 260 acres (120 hectares) northward along Hillsborough River from present day East Pine Avenue southward along State Road 9083 (now USF Boulevard) as part of land grant known as Rancho Santiago del Rio Grande Viejo or Santiago Grantland which included lands east and west of present day downtown Ft. Ammunition also continues to play an important role in world politics and international affairs by providing a ready source of munitions for various conflicts. The story of ammunition starts with ancient Greece, where they were using lead shot from animals to fire arrows at long range. Lead was expensive and not always available in large enough quantities so Greeks had to use other materials such as bronze or copper before reaching a point where they could mass-produce ammo. The Roman Republic began using iron shot in their army around 509 BC. Iron shot was more durable than bronze due to its high strength-to-weight ratio; however, it was more expensive to produce and required skilled workers who could forge it into weapons. As Rome grew stronger, they needed new ways to arm their soldiers so they began developing artillery which included lead shot as well as bronze projectiles called missiles (shot). By the time Julius Caesar became ruler of Rome in 44 BC he had enough experience with artillery development to start producing his own type of artillery known as cataphracts – massive cannons that could shoot over 500miles per minute (300mph) outfitted with lead shots that can still be seen today on public sites across the world! With technology advances came changes in how people accessed ammunition since there was no longer any need for slaves or farmers working perched atop mountainsides picking up rocks when needed instead people now had access to firearms which made manufacturing ammo much easier since guns could be produced anywhere there were resources available like coal fields or mines! Fort Pierce was founded by the Spanish in 1561 on what is now the corner of S.E. 5th and W. 2nd Streets, just south of Indian River Lagoon. It was named for Philip II of Spain, who had sent a group of soldiers to purchase land at this site from the Native Americans. The first Fort Pierce was built on an island in the lagoon and it served as a trading post until 1768 when Father Manuel de la Salle built a more permanent fortification near present-day Magna Carta Way. The British captured Pensacola in 1781 and renamed it Fort George after King George III’s general Sir John Moore, 1st Baronet (1714-1785). In 1810, Ft. Pierce became an artillery station under US command during the Seminole Wars against Seminoles. In 1865, it became part of Florida Territory during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. It reverted to its original name in 1892 when Florida became a state. During World War II, Fort Pierce played an important role as one of two airfields used by USAAF forces stationed in central Florida for training pilots during Operation Neptune’s Spear (the invasion of Sicily). The airfield also served as overflow landing ground for fighters duringair combat over Europe and Mediterranean Theater of Operations (AO), providing emergency airstrips for fighter groups engaging in aerial battles with Nazi Germany and Italy over Libya; Malta; Greece; Yugoslavia; Norway; Denmark; Netherlands East Indies; Australia etc.). After hostilities ceased, Fort Pierce continued to be used as an airport until its closure in 1969 due to budget cuts affecting most government services in Tallahassee/Ft Pierce County combined. The last commercial flights were made from Ft. Pierce Airport on October 10th 1969.]

It was built on a peninsula that forms the mouth of the St. Lucie River and is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Miami.[1] In 1861, Fort Pierce became part of Confederate Florida and it was destroyed by Union forces during the American Civil War. After the war, Fort Pierce resumed operations as a military post but it closed in 1865. In 1902, it reopened as a base for sugar cane production and it continues to be used today as a commercial center.
