In the early 1800s, Fort Myers was a strategic naval base and important for the smuggling of goods in and out of Cuba. In 1829, Captain William G. Moore ordered two light cannons to be installed on the fort's roof to fire warning shots at pirates who had raided Cuban ships. The cannons were designed to project a bright light that could be seen from great distances. The first light flashlights were invented in 1879 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his brother, Pierre Conte. After World War II, Fort Myers experienced rapid growth with development that included: 1) A major renovation/upgrading of downtown including new shopping malls (Lakewood Mall and Gateway Center), numerous office buildings and other businesses, more than 20 residential towers/tower complexes stretching from Midway Boulevard to US 1 near I-75W; 2) Expansion of Air Force Base 2 miles (3 kilometers) northeastward along US 1; 3) Growth of Everglades National Park 300 acres (120 hectares) east of town limits; 4) Acquisition by Pohang Industrial Co., Ltd., South Korea of over 930 acres (380 hectares), comprising much valuable undeveloped land adjacent to Intracoastal Waterway north of downtown; 5) Rapid growth within Broward County following annexation by Palm Beach County in 1990 – containing some 524 square miles (1,500 square kilometers); 6) A current wave (2008–present), which has seen an influx of refugees led by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath – resulting in increased housing prices and joblessness among those displaced or having difficulty finding work elsewhere;7) Increase (+10%) in population per hectare since 2000 due to births (+248 thousand residents), immigration (+780 thousand residents), net loss (-8 thousand residents via natural attrition plus arrivals through international migration rates above 25%, mainly Koreans))
