Fort Myers, Florida is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 34,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg metropolitan area. Fort Myers was founded by American soldiers who were fighting in the Mexican–American War and named for General James K. Polk of the United States Army during that conflict. The city was founded on August 16, 1853 by Captain Isaac Snively and his men from Company D of Second Seminole War veteran battalion "The First Seminoles." The first permanent settlers were Labadie brothers George (George) and John (John) who arrived in 1840 aboard ship "Eagle" from Liverpool with their families and five hundred seedlings raised on their farmstead known as Logansport until they sold it to Wm Houstoun in 1865 for $2,500 cash plus two lots adjoining which they parcel off into blocks now called Snively Street eastwest and New Providence Avenue North central are all original dates or numbers associated with early Ft Myers development including: land grant from King George III December 3rd 1794; incorporation as a town on January 2nd 1850; first meeting of town commissioners September 20th 1850; first dragoon drill ever held at Ft Myers July 4th 1851 commanded by Captain Isaac Snivey In 1860 there were only 36 people living in what is now Fort Myers when Captain Isaac Snively donated 640 acres (250 ha) to make an experimental salt works colony called Estero Salt Colony where he became its President & manager. This included an 8x10 feet salt lick spread over . On October 15th 1860 Capt Snively died suddenly while exploring near Estero Salt Colony after being mauled by animals while out prospecting for oil reserves

Fort Myers began as an outpost on the east coast of Florida in 1795. It was part of Spanish Fort Presidio, which was established in 1793 by Spain to control the area between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. In 1805, Fort Myers became a U.S. military post with jurisdiction over all present-day Monroe County and much of Collier County including Cape Coral and Naples. The fort was abandoned in 1813 following the Treaty of Gadsden that ended the Seminole War. The fortifications were destroyed in 1818 when Lake Erie flooded the area following a severe thunderstorm.
