The name "Fort Myers" comes from Fort Myers Beach on Okeechobee Bay, which was named for General George Washington's military headquarters during the American Revolution. The fort served as a depot for supplies and troops until 1907 when it became an Army post with its own airfield. In 1934, Fort Myers became part of Tampa; however, it reverted to Lee County control in 1959. The city's nickname is "The City ofPalm Beaches." On September 15, 1898 Major General John J. Pershing issued orders to open offensive operations against Spanish forces at Guantanamo Bay Cuba in what would become known as the First World War. On October 10th Fort Myers was named one of twenty-five Military Districts established within the American Sector of Cuba under Pershing's command; this area included most of present-day Lee County and portions of Gulf County and Key West (then called Stonington). In 1941 Fort Myers joined the United States Information Agency as an intelligence community center serving both hemispheres under World War II Headquarters Office, located at Ellington Field near Miami Beach since 1942; during that war Ft Myers also operated two large naval storesyards producing vessels from keel up including USS Alabama (1942) and USS Canaveral (1945). After the war ended in 1945 Ft Myers reverted back toLeeCounty Government control with its own Mayor/Council formulating ordinances governing local affairs including public works projects such as water supply systems etc.; these ordinances continued through 1972 when they were replaced by City Code which remains in effect today On December 12th 1894 Col James M White founded Fort Myers after surveys had shown there existed an available site for a military post on Pensacola Bayou near Corpus Christi Texas because: “It seemed that our government must have some place where we could store our munitions or provisions for our continental army if required” This location would become known as “Fort Myer” From here supplies could be brought into Brazoria County easily by boat or train unloaded onto landing craft then transported by horse & wagon across Pensacola Bayou to Brownsville thence transferred directly to trains running into Galveston
