The area now known as Fort Myers was first settled in the late 1800s by American Indians. The area became a trading post and then a military base during the Seminole Wars. In 1828, Fort Myers was renamed Fort Myers de la Vega after José de la Vega, who had died in Spain while fighting for Mexico against Spain. The town began to grow around the fort, and in 1836 it was made a constitutional city. During the Civil War, Fort Myers saw action on several occasions including the Battle of Fincastle which resulted in two Americans being killed and four wounded. In 1865, Fort Myers joined Florida State capitol complex as part of Volusia County. In 1902, fortifications were built along US-395 to protectFort Myers from shellfire from Cuban insurgents operating out of that country. That same year also saw the opening of First Baptist Church which remains an important religious community today. In 1932, Hurricane Donna caused extensive damage to many businesses in Fort Myers and nearbyMarco Island but no injuries were reported withinFortMyers limits. Two years later Hurricane Charley struck much farther away and left widespread damage across Lee County with most homes destroyed or severely damaged.
