In 1902, construction began on Everglades Park which would offer a recreational environment that would be beneficial to both people living within its boundaries as well as those visiting from out-of-state. Fort Myers continued to grow during World War II with an influx of Allied troops who were stationed here until 1945 when hostilities ended without any combat casualties taking place within our city limits! From then until 1971 Ft Meyers saw no significant growth however due to population decline (the only time this occurred) many businesses closed their doors or converted into apartments/condos over time; however some such notable exceptions include: JVC Inc., IBM Corporation Headquarters (later renamed Intel), Coral Gables Radio Station KVPB (now Univision affiliate WWSB), Shell Oil Refinery #1 (renamed Marathon Freeport Ltd.), Ponce City Mall #1 ( later redeveloped into PNC Arena ), Boca Raton Marina Center (now home to Hurricane Irma relief efforts ), etc…..Today Ft Meyers continues its progressing status becoming one of Southwest Florida's fastest growing communities boasting a population over 10k residents!

The first permanent European settlement in what is now Fort Myers was made on the Caloosahatchee River. The fort was built to protect Spanish colonists from American pirates and Seminole Indians. It burned down in 1835 but was rebuilt and renamed Fort Myers National Historical Park in 1959.
