Fort Myers, Florida was founded in 1836 by Captain James P. Gaines and his crew of the USS Constitution. The first post office in the town was established in 1840. In 1865, Fort Myers became part of Florida Territory when it was ceded to America following its purchase from Spain. In 1966, Fort Myers joined Gulf Coast Exposition Authority which helped promote tourism in the area while also developing new export trade routes. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first human settlement in what is now Fort Myers started when Captain James Cook discovered land that he thought might be a source of food for his ships during his journey around Florida in 1795. In 1835, Colonel John Sappington built Fort Myers as an Army garrison on Major General Andrew Jackson's orders to protect United States interests in Central Florida against Seminole Native Americans who were raiding and pillaging white settlements. After Jacksonville was founded in 1836, Naval Officer Commodore George Mifflin decided to build an anchorage on cape San Marco (now Clearwater Beach) at mouth of Cumbo Creek so that boats could be sent into Tampa Bay for trade with Cuba and other parts of Latin America. By 1840, however, there were noboats or wharves available at mouth of Cumbo Creek so Mifflin built another anchorage about 8 miles (13 km) north-west of present-day Fort Myers on Noyes Island for vessels entering and leaving Tampa Bay. This new facility became known as Mifflin Harbor; it served as the primary landing point for American troops landed during World War II but also served as a training ground for local Marines and Coast Guardsmen until 1959 when it was closed by order of then Defense Secretary Robert McNamara after becoming aware that its use had violated US naval regulations prohibiting military activity within 5 nautical miles (12 km) of shorelines on US coasts without advance notification to US authorities. During the postwar years fort MYers experienced many changes due to their proximity to various military installations including Redstone Arsenal which produced atomic weapons from 1946 until 1962 and later Missile Command which developed ballistic missiles into operational status; these sites brought about numerous jobs and economic development opportunities for members of the community throughout much of the area today known as "The Belt".
