It is located on the mainland side of Marco Island and about 12 miles (19 km) southeast of Fort Myers proper. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fort Myers were French colonists in 1694, and Jesuit missionaries from France also made visits in 1763 and 1764. In 1838, Captain Farragut's squadron of ships sailed through the area on their way to Cuba; they left behind several small forts and warehouses along the shoreline. A wharf was built at present-day downtown Fort Myers by John Gilchrist in 1840 as a stop on their journey. In 1845, American Commodore James Kenedy put into anchor at Ahoy Landing on Marco Island for supplies while he visited Fort Myers en route to his naval station at Naples Bay. He noticed that there had been no fortification around the peninsula so he ordered Rear Admiral David Grier to build one—and within months it was finished! Commodore Kenedy called it "Gillett's Wharf". After Kenedy's death in1846, command passed briefly from Grier to Commodore Matthew Perry until Naval Lieutenant Augustus Caesar took over during this period When Spain ceded Florida to America in 1898, much of what is now Fort Myers became part of US territory including most of Marco Island which then became part of unincorporated Lee County In 1906–07 US Army troops garrisoned Ft Myers after World War I as part of an occupation force; this ended when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 In 1949 Hurricane Donna struck Naples Bay and caused extensive damage near Gillett's Wharf; as a result all military installations were closed down with the exception of two army barracks which remain today as tourist attractions: One occupied by Marine Corps recruits during boot camp training (now known as Marine Barracks #1), while another – known as Battle Ground Army Depot – contains artillery ammunition storage dating back to 1861 . That same year Beacheside Drive was renamed Coral Way following an advertising campaign by local developer Harry Weldon ..... As post-World War II growth continued Andalusia Boulevard eastward into town began becoming more important for shopping reasons than highway access because Interstate 95 bypassed town Center making it difficult for independent businesses such as grocery stores and department stores chains like Sears/Kmart etc., To keep up with fast paced development local officials developed plans which included high speed internet service available throughout town center concurrent with new expanded parking garage facilities just southwest of town center adjacent to Andalusia Boulevard across from courthouse ..... Development continued unabated until late 2007 when hurricane Ivan hit hard causing widespread destruction resulting in nearly $100 million worth or damage done primarily within town limits .... By early 2008 emergency repairs were under way including complete rebuilding or replacement both water mains west side streetscape & utilities eastern side streetscape
