Fort Myers was founded in 1824 as a small fort on the Gulf of Mexico. The first permanent English European settlers arrived in 1828 and it quickly became an important military post due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Myers River. In 1840, Fort Myers became part of the Florida Territory and was renamed Fort Brooke after U.S. General James Buchanan. In 1845, Fort Brooke was redesignated Fort Myers after Major David Wainwright, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and had been rewarded with responsibility for Indian Affairs in Florida. By 1870, Fort Myers had become a major port on the southeast coast of Florida and served as a stopover for goods traveling along the Atlantic Coast from New England to Spain and Cuba. The city developed around this port and attracted waves of immigrants from all over Europe, Asia, Africa and South America during its early years. By 1915, however, Fort Myers had shrunk to its original size due to World War I efforts to restrict travel into southern Florida by Germans and Italians following their victory in that war over Spanish forces at El Paso de los Americanos. In 1925, Fort Myers incorporated as a municipality under state law and began expanding its boundaries towards east Naples across I-95 until it reached just south of Boca Raton Boulevard today’s Business Park Drive NE/Blvd NW which is now known as Ponce de Leon Avenue NE/NW (formerly First Street). As part of this expansion effort, much of what is now downtown Ft Myers was built between 1926-1929 when most commercial development took place within what is now called Old City Hall Square downtown area bounded by Second Street on the north side; Third Street on the west side; Government Center Drive on the south side – also known then as Columbus Avenue – while present day Broadway between Fourth Street & FifthStreet runs through center square together with numerous other alleyways which were closed off during that time period due to lack of sewer or water hookups making them ideal locations for businesses including breweries etc… Today some sections Of downtown have been restored largely thanks to donations from private individuals or groups responsible for such initiatives including new streetscape design elements like light poles coming down out front eliminating street level crossings creating more open spaces within developing neighborhoods instead thereof etc….
