Fort Myers, Florida is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lee County. Fort Myers is located on the Gulf of Mexico coast and bordered to the southeast by Monroe County and to the northwest by Brevard County. The first Europeans to visit Fort Myers were fishermen from France in 1658 and Spanish sailors in 1665. A fur-trading post was established in 1740 by Frenchmen Pierre François Lecoq and Jean Baptiste Chastalier, but it failed because of harsh winter weather. In 1818–19 Indian traders led by Colquitts built a trading post on an island inlet called Punta Gorda that served as a base for smuggling operations during the Seminole War (1835-43). They also built two small fortifications to protect their Trading Post from possible attack from Spanish vessels anchored off Fort Myers. In 1845 Congress authorized building a new fortification at Fort Myers after learning about Spain's efforts to control Tampa Bay through pirates operating out of Cuba. The original fortification comprised three walls with bastions at each corner, backed up by four guns on high eminence that could fire into any direction across the bay. Construction began in 1846 under Colonel James Ewing and continued until 1849 when it was finished by General George Armstrong Custer during his famous Raid on Waco (1869). The fortification was captured shortly thereafter by Mexican forces who burned it down while American forces evacuated without loss or damage. Afterward Fort Myers became a military supply depot serving Confederate troops during the American Civil War (1861-65). In 1865 it became part of Union territory following the war and remained property of Lee County until its sale to private individuals in 1903. During World War II (1939-1945), Fort Myers played an important role as one of five naval airfields used for training pilots flying Bomber Command RAF Spitfires over England during Operation Overlord (the Normandy landings). On 25 May 1944 bombardment aircraft from USS Enterprise attacked inland targets near Rouen; these raids helped convince President Franklin D Roosevelt that airborne bombing should become a viable strategy for warfare against Germany instead of using artillery alone which had been successful against Japanese targets only weeks earlier! The first permanent European settlement in what is now Fort Myers was made by Captain James Cook on December 12, 1765 while exploring the area for Britain. Cook's party consisted of 11 sailors and 2 marines under Commander John Fenton. They erected an unhealthy post known as "Cook's Key" on a cape near present-day Fort Myers Boulevard. On October 16, 1767 records show that a committee of Englishmen organized by Lt.-Governor James Wilkinson appointed George Washington Lieutenant Colonel commanding Brigade into which was put Captain Cook with his three companies of marines under Major John Ligonier. A second group including two companies from Georgia also participated A storehouse and fort were built on Spanish land grant "Boscada" about two miles north of present-day downtown Fort Myers in 1801 by Spanish governor José Joaquín de Herrera y Costilla to protect American traders shipping through that port from pirates operating out of Havana Bay. British explorer Captains David Thompson and William Bligh were also cruising along Tampa Bay when they noticed large quantities of guarana (a tropical fruit) being unloaded at "Boscada." After investigating further they discovered that this was done by Indians obtained permission from Spain to filch some cargo worth $4 million dollars from American ships protected by Spanish warships off Havana Bay during the War for Independence in Cuba! In 1807 American Commodore James Watts sailed up Tampa Bay searching for British treasure vessels encountered nothing but deserted ships which he assumed must have been carrying treasure back to England! He then sailed downriver towards Havana Harbor where he sighted several Spanish merchant vessels laden with contraband supplies bound for America - this led him to believe that there must be enormous amounts of treasure hidden somewhere inside Cuba!
