In 1865, Colonel Augustus Hargrave organized what is now known as Company C (4th Battalion) 3rd U S Artillery at First street east of US Highway 11 near Seward Park (now Veterans Memorial Park). That company served until 1898 when it was disbanded due to World War I service requirements; however, its members continued to meet annually at First Street east of US Highway 11 near Seward Park until they were disbanded again after World War II due to changes in military policy.
