Fort Myers, Florida is a city in Southwest Florida that straddles the southeast coast of Tampa Bay. The area was first settled by Native American Apalachee people in the early 1800s. In 1836, Fort Myers was founded as a trading post on Cape Sable Island by Captain David Stuart and his forces during the Seminole War. It quickly became a center for trade with Cuba, Venezuela, and other parts of South America. In 1857, Fort Myers was renamed Fort Myers Beach after Rear Admiral John Wainwright who had spearheaded military operations against Seminoles in Central America. Jacksonville was chartered as the capital of Florida in 1889 and Fort Myers became its second municipal government. On December 12th 1915, Congress passed an act renaming all US Naval bases along the Gulf Coast from Spanish to English names; Ft Myers thus reverted to its original name of Fort Myers Beach on November 3rd 1916. The first firearms manufactured in Fort Myers were pistols made by J Newton & Sons Gunmakers from 1883-1885 using percussion caps and lead bullets. The pistol industry began to boom following World War I when modifications were made to make machine guns more effective than handguns at range or used against hostile tribes such as Apache Indians living near the fort garrisoned daily by Ulysses S Grant’s army during World War II. Machine guns were also muzzleloader rifles which worked much like shotguns but fired balls instead of rounds which gave them greater accuracy at long ranges than handguns ever could. As Henry Repeating Arms Company (HRA) began production of their first Model 5 “Punisher” rifle in 1911 they helped spur development of what would become automatic firearms including CAR-15 rifles which saw service with Marines throughout World War II until they were replaced by Thompson submachineguns beginning in 1945 however many HRA models continued into use until converted to fire gas operated weapons products beginning around 1957-1960 called RPKs). One interesting footnote about this company is that their plant located across Hillsborough Avenue from present day City Hall building still produces magazines for issue rifles today (albeit not for combat purposes) – lending it some local fame! In 1949, President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9981 creating National Firearms Act regulations governing gun ownership and possession including licensing requirements for manufacturers, dealers, collectors etc., making it one of the most significant pieces of legislation affecting gun rights since passage of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution back two centuries earlier! Ordinance No 4689 created Bureau Of Alcohol Tobacco And Firearms within Department Of Justice regulating all aspects firearm sales while Regulation No 6471 prohibited illegal transportation or carriage without prior background check! These regulation continue onto this day although ATF has been disbanded entirely less than 2 years ago! After years spent being regulated at various levels through both state and federal governments Battle Creek Armory opened up shop next door serving primarily law enforcement officers statewide as well as anyone who needed assistance getting a handgun license/permit or just wanted to buy one! This armory would later become known as Steyr USA before being closed down due to financial troubles in late 2006 though some portions have now resumed operation under new management including a replica thereof located inside City Hall!). Today there is still active duty law enforcement activity taking place out front thanks largely to helicopter rides provided by SteyrUSA security personnel currently providing coverage for several major events surrounding town annually)!
