The first permanent European settlement in what is now Fort Myers was made on the present-day site of Myers Beach by Spanish colonists in 1763. The area that is now Fort Myers was part of the Everglades and was used for hunting, fishing, and trade. The first fortification built around this time was a palisade of logs. In 1814, Fort Myers became an official U.S. military post after being purchased from the British United States Army by Rear Admiral James Wainwright. By 1840, Fort Myers had a population of about 20 people and consisted of two buildings: a storehouse and a barracks for the garrison troops. On November 5, 1845, Commodore John Dennison Rodney arrived at nearby Port Tampa with his Expedition to Indian River Bay and reported that he had found land east of the mouth of St. Johns River on which to build a naval station for commerce purposes; he named itFort Myers Bay after himself and given it to Admiring Captain John Saginaw (1775-1850) who served as Commandant at Fort Myers from 1850 until its decommissioning in 1865 In 1870, Fort Myers became an incorporated city when it annexed portions of Clearwater and Pinellas Counties In 1888, Ft Myers changed its name back to its original name – "Fort Myers" – after becoming an important seaport town in Southwest Florida After serving as the capital city during Florida’s reconstruction period following World War II, Ft Meyers returned as the state capital in 1959 In 1994–1995, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of downtown Ft Meyers but did not damage or demolish any structures within City Limits
