Fort Myers, Florida is a city in Lee County, Florida and the seat of government. It was founded in 1835 by Colonel James Wilkinson as a military post on theranch of Fort Myers. In 1840, Captain John Fenton purchased land east of present-day Fort Myers and developed it into what is now Coral Gables. In 1849, Wilkinson sold his holdings to J. A. Barnes for $1,500 cash. On October 10 that year, Barnes renamed the town Fort Myers after himself and placed an ordinance limiting Sunday trading within its limits at 5 paces (12 feet). On December 3, 1861 – during the American Civil War – Confederate General Pte Ekels entered Ft Myers with 4 cannonballs and fired them from a hill near Main Street; this event marks the beginning of the end for Ft Myers as an important Confederate base camp

Fort Myers was founded in 1824 by Captain James Buchanan as a small trading post on the Indian River. The fort served as a military garrison until 1827, when it became the capital of Florida. Fort Myers grew rapidly during its early years, and by 1840 had become an important stop on the Seminole Trail. The fort was abandoned in 1845, but continued to be used for storage and for military purposes until it was destroyed by fire in 1893.
