After nearly two years of construction work by Navy personnel and local civilians (), FNS opened its doors on November 5, 1926 with military transport services providing access to Tampa Bay for troops fighting in World War II(). With continued expansion and modernization plans undertaken by both Federal agencies ()and private interests (), FNS grew rapidly into one of America's premier naval air stations (); it supported operations off both coasts of North America during the 1920s and 1930s (). In 1951 Fort Lauderdale became permanently attached to Miami when Defense Secretary William Paley announced that Florida would become a state; this change formalized FtLauderdale's status as one of America's "nine states". By 1959 defense spending had declined significantly due to competition from faster growing cities like Dallas-Fort Worth ()and Jacksonville (); however FtLauderdale remained an important player within American airspace until its closure effective March 1st, 1975 following enactment of Publish or Perish legislation ().
