Fort Lauderdale, Florida is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. It was founded on December 3rd, 1915 by the United States Army and the Navy as Fort Lauderdale Naval Weapons Station. The city became an incorporated municipality on January 12th, 1943. The population of Fort Lauderdale was 1,644 at the 2000 census. As of 2010, it had a population of 753,[1] making it the third-largest city in Miami–Dade County and one of its ten most populous cities. The first rifle scopes were made in Fort Lauderdale by optics manufacturer Heizer and Company in 1915. In 1923 Heizer merged with National Optics Corporation to form National Optics Incorporated. Other companies that produced rifle scopes during this time include Simmons Optical (1925), American President (1927), Regal Arms Manufacturing Company (1929), and Rayleigh Rifle Scopes & Lenses Manufacturing Company (1932). By 1934 all these companies had ceased production due to World War II.[2]

Dyer would later become Police Chief of Broward Sheriff's Office under then-Sheriff Al Lambert until his retirement effective January 1st, 2006. On October 15th 2006 it was announced that Lambert had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and will be retiring at age 70 leaving behind an entire command staff including six captains and over 18 officers as well as several dozen civilian employees who are currently working on various projects associated with Lambert’s final days living memory - many still wearing their uniforms even though he has not yet completed his full three years since diagnosis! His successor Willie Brown will take office on January 1st 2009

It became an important port for the region after railroads arrived in the early 1800s. The city's economy changed significantly following World War II when planners developed what is now known as "The Strip" – an area of downtown that extends from South Boulevard to First Street and Westchester Avenue to Miami Avenue – which became the major tourist destination in the region. The first permanent settlers were Spanish refugees who had fled Cuba during the American Revolution. They built homes on Indian Creek near present-day Doheny Park before being driven out by Seminole Indians in 1835. A smallpox epidemic killed most of them in 1837, but some returned to build Fort Worth nearby along Biscayne Bayou (now part of Ft. Lauderdale). When it was decided to build curtains along both coasts of America to provide protection against French pirates, Captain Sallis recommended building a fort at Boca Raton Beach because it would be difficult for pirates to get intoland without getting close to shorelines. The site chosen for Fort Lauderdale was just west of today's intersection of Northwest Second Street and Northwest Third Street – north of today's Broward County lines and south of today's Hollywood boundary between Hollywood and Lauderhill townships. The first fortifications were built around 1892 with cannons imported from Spain and delivered by ship each season until 1903 when they were moved ashore from HMS "Dover". In 1898, President William McKinley issued Executive Order 9102 establishing Umatilla Stripes Squadron composed of volunteer militiamen under the command of Commodore George Dewey headquartered atiter Estero Inlet on Pensacola Bay outside Tampa Bayestablishing jurisdiction over all southernFlorida waters subject only to Umatilla Act ceded by Australia on 10 October 1900; this order authorized Umatilla Coast Guard Station at Port Everglades northeastof Everglades National Parkto serve as primary coast guard for southeasternFlorida
Fort Lauderdale was founded in 1915 by Captain John A. Ketchum and Major George W. Ladd as a small trading post on the Tamiami Trail. The city's first mayor, James M. Harkins, who also served as its first court judge, helped to name the fort after himself. Fort Lauderdale became an official U.S Army post in 1917 when it was named "Pensacola Beach" after then-Army General John J. Pershing's visit to the area. The post saw active military service during World War I and World War II before becoming a municipally owned business in 1949. In 1951, Fort Lauderdale became one of five Florida cities to be annexed into Miami-Dade County; it has remained part of that county since then.
