Fort Lauderdale, Florida is a city located in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 853,567 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Miami-Dade County and the second largest municipality within Miami-Dade County afterMiami. Fort Lauderdale became a town on December 14, 1949. The name of the original town was "Vero Beach", but it was changed to Fort Lauderdale on January 1, 1950 because of its proximity to Miami and Vero Beach. In 1957, Fort Lauderdale annexed part of neighbouring unincorporated community of Hollywood which had a population of about 25 residents at that time. On November 3rd 1959, fort Lauderdale annexed what is now Parkland Heights as part of its municipal boundaries. In 1966, fort Lauderdale annexed Everglades City and parts of Sunrise Boulevard and Coral Springs Avenue from Weston Park Local School District #1 (now BrowardCounty schools). Starting in 1969 Walt Disney World opened its first theme park - Magic Kingdom - just east of downtown Fort Lauderdale while still inside the municipal boundaries. That same year saw construction begin on what would become Dolphin Stadium - now home to the NFL's Dolphins football team - becoming one of South Florida's most vibrant cities with an increasing number high-rise buildings erected along Biscayne Boulevard near Miracle Mile beachfront shopping mall enclosing both beaches as well as some upscale hotels and casinos catering mostly to tourists from both South America (Chile) and Europe (England) visiting Palm Beach County during that period before Big Apple style skyscrapers were being built nearby including One World Trade Center later renamed New York City/World Trade Center less than 10 miles away across Roosevelt Avenue originally called Madison Avenue which led directly to Lincoln Square where today's Rockefeller Center stands just south west corner once again renamed for another major tourist attraction this time named after another major South Florida hotel developer this time called Universal Studios Hotel also later renamed Times Square more than likely due to Interstate 5 freeway running through downtown nearly adjoining it making transportation difficult if not impossible now days especially since all I-5 exits are located outside Miami proper except for one very short exit leading into Downtown proper via a brand new expressway bypassing downtown
