The town prospered until 1819 when an American force under General Andrew Jackson forced Spain to cede all their possessions in Latin America including Ft Lauderdale back to United States hands under Treaty Of Paris which ended World War I. This event saw heavy U S military activity in South Florida as many soldiers were stationed here during World War I because supplies could only be brought up through boat trips from Tampa Bay which was then closed off from shipping due to naval blockade
