By 1849–50 alligator hunting had drawn residents to Ft. Lauderdale from throughout southernFlorida so much so that they began to refer to it as “Gulf Beach County”; however this designation would not be used until 1912 when Sheriff Hennepin Stroud renamed it Broward County after then-Govt.– erstwhile Mexican Commander at Santiago Barrancos during the Insurgent War (1846-48). During World War II most Of FtLauderdale's employment came from U S Naval Activities which built many shipyards here including Marietta Boatbuilding Company & Dry Dock Co., Bethlehem Steel Corp., Douglas Aircraft Co., Sunoco Refining Co., Jiffy Lube Oil Co., US Airways Aviation Corporation etc.; also numerous other industries including engine production at Will Rogers Airport from 1961 thru 1978 and Shipbuilding/ Engineering production at Venice Boatyard from 1964 thru 1984 just to name a few….. Finally Today nearly every major fast food chain in Southwest Florida has a locations here……….

Fort Lauderdale was founded on May 14, 1894 by Captain John S. Worth and his men as a military post in what is now Broward County. The first post office opened in Fort Lauderdale on that date. In 1912, Fort Lauderdale became the county seat ofBroward County. On November 5, 1928, Fort Lauderdale was renamed Mosquito Coast after the International Mosquito Control Association's program to reduce mosquito populations throughout Florida.
