Florida City is a city in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The first permanent settlement in what is now Hillsborough County was made by Mensahee Indians in 1824 on the east side of Palm Harbor Bay. The town of Fort Myers was founded in 1827 and named for Admiral John C. Frémont who had explored the bay that later became Hillsborough County. After Fort Myers failed to take off, Spanish settlers established a mission here called San Fernando Rey de Tenerife in 1829. In 1840, when Florida became a territory of the United States, Fort Myers became known as Jacksonville and Jacksonville Landing grew up around it as an agricultural center with sugar cane plantations and cattle ranches. In 1851, Jacksonville landed James Kapp on a ship called "Osprey" to found what would become Tampa Bay Area Water Supply Company (TBASCO). He leased land from the Seminole Nation for this purpose and built two reservoirs: Doak's Creek Reservoir on Stater Street east of downtown and Hillsborough River Reservoir west of US 41/59 near Ybor Park Race Course
In 1823, the citrus industry in Florida City was fledgling. The first crop of oranges was grown in 1825 and by 1830, there were over thirty fruit trees on the property. In 1840, two brothers, Isaac and Elijah Payne, began to grow sugarcane on their farm east of town. By 1870, sugar cane had become the dominant crop in Florida City. The city's first school was built in 1851 and it closed in 1865 due to lack of funds. A new school was built in 1872, but it also closed due to low enrollment. A second school was built in 1903, but it too closed after just a few years due to financial difficulties. In 1907, Florida City became part of Miami-Dade County when that county was formed from portions of Miami and Broward counties. As part of this change, the name for the city changed from "Florida City" to "Miami-Dade County". In recent years, development has resumed around Florida Cityγ however many challenges still remain such as infrastructure deficits γ which have kept some businesses operating for longer periods than expected or need replacementε although progress is being made graduallyδ
