Florida City is a city in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Key Largo, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Florida City" first appeared on maps in 1821 as "Cayuga". In 1881 it was renamed to its current name of Florida City after General George Armstrong Custer and his regiment had their training there during the Mexican–American War. The area that would become Florida City was first inhabited by the Apalachee Tribe before Spanish explorers discovered it in 1541 or 1542. Spanish settlers arrived in what is now Escambia County in 1765 and named it Los Tejanos de la Bahía for José Antonio Tejanos, captain general of San Miguel de Allende's army against Mexico under Hernando Cortés. In 1821, Captain John Smith explored this region for Spain and reported finding an abundance of saltwater tributaries which are now known as Bayous Escambia and Mobile Bayou according to USGS Geographic Names Data from 2009. On July 4, 1831, Jacksonville Landing became a permanent American port when Commodore James Farragut's USS Constitution reached Jacksonville anchoring off Point Choctaw Key near present day Pensacola Beach early morning In 1881, following annexation by Jacksonville (then St Augustine), Florida City became one of many towns incorporated into Jacksonville proper; however its original site remained within Escambia County until 1907 when all county boundaries were revised due to increasing population density withinEscambia County alone.
