The first permanent settler in what is now Florida City was Alonso de la Hoz on February 2, 1565. La Hoz named his land "Cuba" after his homeland of Cuba in Spain. On October 21, 1835, Captain William Stetson verified that there were no Native American villages east or south of Fort Myers when he discovered and surveyed the region now known as Florida City. He named it for José María Félix De Soto y Tejeda who had explored the eastern coast of South America in search of new lands to explore from 1795 to 1800 under the command of Lieutenant Governor Manuel de Mena y Figueroa. The first house in what became Florida City was built by Isaac Butt on November 14th, 1837 at lot number 9 on foot path leading north from Fort Myers beach towards present day State Road 526 (the old route designation US 1). The town boundaries changed many times during its early years; by 1840 it included all but today's west side along SR 526 between MLK Boulevard and Coconut Grove Avenue including much property located within today's Everglades National Park boundaries which are still administered by Miami-Dade County government through park district management offices located within Everglades National Park boundaries - making this one of only a few U.S cities where both local government and national governmentoperated agencies share jurisdiction over same assets/environments! In 1851 Drury organized a church service at least six times per week for some 6000 people living near him just outside current day mile marker 191st Street NW (now part of I-10) site now occupied by FtLauderdale golf course extending into SW corner undeveloped lot owned by Judge James Waddell - boundary then being NE corner 3/4ths mile long due ESE to low lying swampy soil & other acres also belonging to Judge James Waddell future site for shopping center! + lots stretching out E & W 10+ miles newly surveyed by Surveyor General John Gregg & others Nov 1861 including parts now occupied by I-10 (WNW corner 2/3rds mile), monte Carlo Mexican restaurant location later moved to NW corner lot held jointly with wife Agnes McFarlane Richardson prior Residence Site at 54th Street SE Lots remaining unincorporated until 1940 when they formed Palm Beach County

Florida City is a city in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,502 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Escambia County and one of its most populous municipalities. The city is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 26 miles (39 km) east of Pensacola and 21 miles (33 km) south of Jacksonville. The first Europeans to visit Florida City were Captain James Cook and his crew who explored what is now Escambia County on May 14, 1765 while circumnavigating the world aboard HMS Resolution. Cook named both Pensacola Bay and present-day Escambia County after King George III of Great Britain as part of his exploration efforts. Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto called this area Biscayne Bay after ancient Biscayne Island near Key West, Florida where he landed in 1513 following his failed attempt to find Hispaniola (the island now Haiti). The first white residents arrived in 1821 when David Forbes built a sugar plantation on Whatcom Inlet about four miles northeast of present-day Florida City. By 1829, Forbes had developed land that extended from Whatcom Inlet to Ybor Point on Tampa Bay before selling it all to Jno Troup for $2 million dollars in 1831. Troup had been born in Scotland but came to America when he was only 12 years old and became an owner/operator of several plantations including Tampa's 1st Upland Cotton Mill which opened in 1830 along with 1 other mills located around Tampa Bay later known as Hillsborough Mills; Pinellas Mills; Sarasota Mills; St Petersburg Mills etc., making him one of America's leading cotton brokers/owners during this period. He also ran a ferry service connecting TampaBay with Jacksonville across Clearwater Harbor which continued until 1865 when salt water began flooding into the bay due to overfishing by vessels and raised levels caused by Hurricane Andrew which struck late that year!. In 1865, Commodore John Rodgers sailed USS Constitution into Clearwater Harbor just north of what is nowFlorida City after having come ashore at Port Everglades following passage through Hurricane Sandy! After disembarking their ship they founded Tallahassee as the capital for Florida Territory - becoming one step closer towards statehood! In 1827 Governor James Kenedy established Ft Walton Beach as a military post outside what is nowFort Walton Beach so that British ships not sailing through Miami could be searched for contraband goods coming out from Cuba via Havana harbor! Eventually Fort Walton Beach became inactive and was renamed Fort Pierce Municipal Beaches Commission District No 7 prior to 1963 when it was abolished & merged with nearby Indian River county beach district #7!!! Today there are no active military installations within or around town limits!!! After various threats & lawsuits over title issues surrounding adjacent land adjoining what is todayHollywood Boulevard between Polk Street & Figueroa Street - US Congress passed legislation establishing Flagler Coast National Monument effective October 16th 1915 thru November 3rd 1916 under Public Law 6555... This monument preserves artifacts associated with both Santa Rosa de Avila Mission & Spanish settlement including: Paintedado Chapel Ruins cannonsballery intact; Shipwrecked Captains Graveyard petroglyphs defensive wall remains still standing off shorenearby Gadsden Inlet interior courtyard still contains human remains dating back 10k+ years includingintact full headdress mummy discovered by archaeologists near Estero preservations area 2008.......Today Baldwin Park offers visitor attractions such as PaleoIndian archaeological ruins beneath Poinciana Dam ruinsnicknamed "Museum Ruins"...... Alligators can be seen inhabiting several areas inside&outside downtown......... As mentioned earlier Flagler Coast National Monument includes many remnants from early Spanish colonial era Including: Santa Rosa de Avila Mission archeological Ruins Cannonballery Intact Shipwrecks Offshore Gadsden Inlet Interior Courtyard Still Contains Human Remains Dating back 10k+ Years
Florida City was founded in 1835 by Captain George W. Smith as a small village on the banks of the St. Johns River. It grew rapidly and soon became one of Florida's most important cities, thanks to its strategic location between Miami and Jacksonville and its rich natural resources. In the late 19th century, Florida City experienced a period of growth that is still considered an Historic District by the city government. This growth included the construction of many new homes, businesses, and churches in what is now known as The Central Business District (CBD). The CBD saw rapid development after World War II because it was becoming an important transportation hub for both Miami and Jacksonville. This growth led to increased traffic congestion, which negatively affected property values in the CBD. In response, city officials began working to develop new plans for the CBD that would improve traffic flow and protect property values. These plans were finally realized in the early 2000s when improvements were made to University Avenue, which now connects the CBD with other neighborhoods in town.
