The city has experienced numerous waves of population growth since it was founded: in 1837 there were only five families living in Florida City; by 1850, there were over 350 residents; by 1900, there were more than 1,000 residents with an estimated population of 3,500 in 1914; and by 1940 there were more than 10,000 residents within its limits
Florida City was founded in 1837 by Captain John Stephenson and his wife, Martha. The town was named for the Florida Keys, which at that time were a part of Cuba. The Stephenson family built a Fort on the Key Largo Peninsula in 1838 and began to trade with natives. In 1840, Captain Stephenson moved his family to Jacksonville and started a hotel there. In 1847, he purchased land east of Jacksonville on which he erected a large brick building that is still standing today. He also built a wharf on the bayou south of Jacksonville and formed an association with other merchants to sell goods produced in the area. Florida City became one of the most important commercial centers in Duval County until it declined after World War II when new markets were developed in Jacksonville and Tampa Bay.
