Florida City is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 784 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The history of Florida City dates back to 1892 when it was founded as an agricultural community on the edge of what is now Overtown and Libertytown neighborhoods. In 1907, the name "Florida City" became official when it was annexed by Miami from Spanish Fort. In 1912, a group of developers led by Jules Allaire bought land in central Miami and began to build what would become known as "the most beautiful town in America." The first phase of development included the construction of a large creamery and candy factory, two hotels and numerous homes. The second phase began in 1925 and included the erection of a grandstand for baseball games at Marlins Park (later renamed Marlins Ballpark), an amusement park including several rides such as alligators, ferris wheels and Nickelodeon theme parks called "Taco Time", a shopping center with over 100 stores including Tiffany's department store, Herald Square Theatre (now FirstMerit Bank) – home to both feature films and Broadway productions – two movie theaters (Citizen Kane Revisited in 1933 and not played anymore until 2006), two driving ranges/golf courses (one built specifically for golfers only), seven tennis courts (including one unusual 3-foot diamond court that could be used for rugby matches), six swimming pools - four were originally built withunionized salt water tanks but are now heated by electricity - three minor league teams - one each from Daytona Beach; Live Oak; Key Biscayne; West Palm Beach - as well as twelve houses designed by architect Stanford White. In 1951, Coral Gables became incorporated within Florida City limits. That same year saw the opening of Marlins Park which replaced the Creamery & Candy Factory complex on Third Avenue South which had been damaged by fire years earlier while being used as an armory during World War II. The new ballpark quickly became one of America's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its views overMiami Bay and its distinctive open-air design featuring orange trees planted along each team's dugout sideline adjacent to giant stands housing concessions stand,. Florida City is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 29,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Florida City was first settled by African Americans as part of what is now Overtown in 1895. In 1912, the area became known as "Miami Heights". The name was changed to "Florida City" in 1945 when it became a part of Miami-Dade County. In 1951, construction began on the Everglades Expressway which linked Miami with Jacksonville and Tampa. The road was completed in 1957 and made Florida City an important transportation hub for both cities. In 1978, the local government passed a resolution recognizing Flag Day and declared May 5th Flag Day in Florida City's honor. In 1985, then-Mayor Jorge Diaz announced plans to build a $30 million mall called ""The Gables"" on land that had been used for agricultural purposes since the early 1800s. The mall would be located near downtown Florida City and would include an IMAX movie theater, several restaurants and stores, and a football stadium. However, due to opposition from residents who felt their homes were being taken away for development, Mayor Diaz abandoned his plans after only four months in office. On February 17th of that year (1986), controversy erupted over the proposed demolition of Freedom Tower located within walking distance of both downtown Florida City and FlaCities Mallards Inc., one of two amusement parks planned for development adjacent to The Gables complex; however no action was taken until after Hurricane Augustey destroyed mostafa lagoons east of Freedom Tower - leaving Freedom Tower standing tall once again! On October 12th 1986 another hurricane season storm struck mainland US making landfall just outside Of Freedom Tower... this time demolishing all 4 sides off tower & blocking any future renovation or reconstruction! Following these disasters many residents left FLCity altogether & established themselves nearer mainland US.... creating today's #blessedqualityoflife situation
