However, during World War II most of the industry went away due to rationing; however many businesses have since reopened such as USF's medical school which moved to Florida City in 1961. In recent years much development has occurred with plans being made to add an airport and several new residential neighborhoods west of downtown near USF's campus. Today there are still plenty of things that make FlaCity special including its rich cultural history including African American history dating back to before Seminole settlement; Mediterranean cuisine from Syria; Spanish culture from Mexico;Creole music from Louisiana; art galleries including one devoted entirely to contemporary artists living in or around FlaCity; lively nightlife scene complete with bars and clubs all across downtown packed with locals who enjoy sports such as football (USF), basketball (Florida Southern University), baseball (Orlando Sentinel) or tennis (Tampa Bay Times). The first humans to live in what became Florida City were Creek natives who hunted and gathered game near the mouth of the Kissimmee River. A post office was established in 1836, and by 1840, there were about 20 people living in what is now Florida City. A mill was erected here in 1868, and soon after a sawmill, gristmill, flour mill and railroad depot were built. The city came into being on April 12, 1875 when it incorporated as a town under the name of "Emmett." In 1907-1908 an ad campaign for a new baseball stadium called "The Swamp" took place across from Miami's Federal Building on Northwest First Street. The then-newly created county of Polk donated land along Southwest Third Street between Palm Drive (now Fourth Avenue) and North Second Street for use as the park that would become "The Swamp." In 1911 voters passed an ordinance providing for school district organization within Polk County; this led to creation of Seminole County east of Lake Okeechobee which included much of what is now Florida City. On November 3rd 1914 residents voted to change their town name to "Florida City" following approval from the US Congress through Resolution No. 910-A. On January 1st 1932 Fayetteville Municipal Airport opened with two runways - 15/33 measuring 4 miles wide x 400 feet long each - making it one of only two airports open at that time in FLORIDA COUNTY! However World War II intervened and until 1946 no commercial airline service operated out Fayetteville airport! In 1948 construction began on Dixie Highway – later renamed US Highway 1 – connecting Tampa Bay with Jacksonville via Sanford/Winter Haven/Ft Myers etc., becoming one of America’s first interstate highways! By 1972 all but 2 miles had been completed when Hurricane Andrew destroyed many homes & businesses along SR1 & other damage caused by Maria including extensive flooding throughout FlaCity proper which forced completion OF THE REST OF THE HIGHWAY earliest possible date!! Needless Tosay many Floridians never got to see or drive ON THAT IMPORTANT HIGHWAY… just listen as history tells us some rather interesting stories behind where it currently stands today!
Florida City is a city in the United States on the East Coast of Florida. The population was 9,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of Miami-Dade County. Florida City was founded by people from Georgia and is located on a small island in Miami Bay. The original town site lay within what is now Overtown, and it was first mentioned in 1694 when Captain Christopher Columbus visited the area. In 1868, millionaire John D. Rockefeller bought an island next to where Florida City now stands for use as his private estate called "Rockefeller Island". In 1886, local businessmen built what became known as "The Star" hotel and casino on what is now Flagler Street between First Street and Second Street. The casino operated until 1951 when it was sold to the state of Florida under then-Governor Manuel López de Gortari for $350,000 dollars. At its peak during the late 1920s and early 1930s, Florida City had over 20 stores, six restaurants, three bars/lounges, two movie theaters (the nearby El Pierrot Theatre and the Grand theatre), four skating rinks (four artificial ice surfaces), twelve tennis courts (ten were surface level with one being an Olympic size rink), thirteen bowling alleys (eleven were indoor with six being much larger than today's versions), seventy-six swimming pools inside or outside of town limits, ninety-eight golf courses open to members only or seven with special membership privileges for those who paid hefty dues; twenty-one water parks; thirteen merry go rounds; fifty race tracks; sixteen hospitals; one jail; two airports—Miami International Airport and Touchstone Airport—and more than 1 million square feet of retail space including more than 350 different stores/stores that could be opened at any time! Today there are only a few buildings left standing from earlier days such as: The Star Hotel which still stand today on Flagler Street between First & Second Streets after many years occupancy by various businesses including a KFC restaurant since 1984 serving up chicken fingers all day long until they closed in 2006 due to poor management but most notable structures such as old post office building still standing along side Richards Boulevard near NW 3rd St., still used for storage purposes by Business Owners before conversion into apartments starting in 2013
