In 1865, Captains John Mize and Cornelius Vanderbilt donated land at what is now First Street and Bay Avenue for the purpose of creating a public school district. The new school district was named after Commodore John Troup, who had contributed money to help finance it. In 1898, Commodore John Troup donated land near Third Street and Bay Avenue for use as a military base forthe Spanish-American War against American forces. After the war, Commodore Troup donated another parcel of land to createFlorida City Park (now part of US 1). Florida City is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 1,483 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake of the City of Florida. The first English settlers in what is now Miami-Dade County were led by John Coe and James Key in 1835 and named it "Flavel". When Spanish traders arrived in 1795 they called the area "Isla de la Culiacán" which means "Island of the Coyotes." In 1821, Captain George Rogers Clark landed on Isla de la Culiacán with his exploration party and named it after General Carlos Manuel de Rosales, who had conquered Mexico three years earlier. The city was founded as Flavel by John Coe and James Key on December 25, 1835. The first English settler to arrive in what is now Miami-Dade County was John Coe with his family from Plymouth in England. He named the settlement Flavel after his home country of Great Britain where he had settled before coming to America. While Key and Company built a log cabin near present day Biscayne Bay, construction did not continue until March 8,1836 when Captains David Barron and Wright completed a canal from Pensacola to Fort Lauderdale that linked Tampa Bay with Indian River Lagoon (now Everglades National Park). When Spanish traders arrived in 1795 they called this area Isla de las Cucarachas which means "Island of Bears." In 1821 Captain George Rogers Clark landed on Isla de las Cucarachas with his exploration party and naming it after General Carlos Manuel de Rosales who had conquered Mexico three years earlier. A half century later when Floridians began settling north along US 1 they renamed Flavel after their state capital – Tallahassee – while southern Floridians continued to call the area Isla de la Culiacán meaning "Island of the Coyotes." However, by 1840 both settlements had been abandoned due to overpopulation; however key men such as John Aiken remained behind to develop new homesteads around present day Flamingo Beach Road between Flagler Street/Biscayne Boulevard and I-595/SR 2026E opposite Marlins Park. In 1865 American Henry Flagler purchased land east of I-595/SR 2026E for $500 that he would Eventually build into Palm Beach Gardens (later Palm Beach) just south of I-595 exit 95A off SR 714 about two miles east from present day Florida City limits but neighbor Blanco Creek Wildlife Preserve remains today adjacent to FLORIDA CITY limits just outside Boca Raton beach access Rd., . In 1839, Captain John Stephens of the brig "Florida" landed in what is now Florida City, Fla., on the Gulf of Mexico and set up a trading post. After some years, he sold his land to José Francisco de la Luz y Pérez and others, who founded the town of Pensacola. In 1845, President James K. Polk issued a proclamation creating the city of Pensacola out of parts of Spanish Fort and Fernandina Beach. The first block in Florida City was laid out in 1846 by J.C. Nichols as part of a plan to create an " American outpost" along the Gulf Coast from Mobile to Tampa Bay. In 1850s, Florida City became known for its cotton plantations; many slaveowners moved their slaves there during this time period because it was much easier to do so than farther inland where transportation was more difficult or impossible. During this time period also, many famous people lived and worked in or around Florida City including: Andrew Jackson (the president), James Kenedy (the founder and first mayor), General Zachary Taylor (the general who led America into World War I), Flora Stoneman (a United States Senator from Arizona) and Commodore Perry (of the Perry Expedition that explored Alaska). In 1865 Pensacola changed hands again when Confederate forces occupied it during the American Civil War; it later reverted back to Spanish control until 1898 when it fell under American occupation after Spain ceded sovereignty to America. A large number of Seminole Indians were killed by Ulysses S Grant's army during Reconstruction efforts following slavery's abolition in 1865-1868; these hostilities are also responsible for most buildings not having original construction dates such as courthouses and jail cells which date from this era rather than earlier implementation attempts like courthouse walls that were built subsequent decades ago without significant Indian building assistance or knowledge about how things should be done originally! Since 1898 Pensacola has been an incorporated city with its own government which is responsible for providing services such as education, law enforcement, public works etc.; however due to its location within panhandle Region 6 state government operations are still managed centrally by Tallahassee via state troopers assigned statewide duties
