At different points over time: 1830s – early 1840s: sugar cane plantations were established near present day Lighthouse Point/Miami Beach; these estates were later sold or divided among various families including Laughlin, Olney (co-founder of modern day South Beach), Brickell (founder of Brickell Avenue), Dunmore (the last white male occupant in 1959), Phelan (of Phelan Park which includes current-day University Drive) – all areas lying within what would become North Miami Dade County; many slaves worked on these plantations; some remain enslaved today 1830s – 1840s: Indian Plantations existed around present day Kendallville/Miami Lakes area west of Cutler Creek and east of Northeast 8th Street; these properties were eventually bought or leased by European Americans such as Gideon Welles, Jabez Winnett (owner & builder of Sun Life Insurance Building & other structures at SW 14th St./ Overtown Ave.), Samuel Morse & Alfred Vail Sr.; all areas lay within what would become south Miami Dade County; many slaves worked on these plantations too but most continued working until freed in 1865 following US Civil War victory over Mexico
