The land that would become Florida City was purchased from the Seminole Tribe by James Fenton in 1836. The first permanent settler was Capt. George Rogers Clark who built his home on what is now Northwest Third Street in 1840. By 1860, there were over 100 residents and businesses in Florida City. In 1865, A Hennepin Canal Company project led to increased trade and development around the canal basin which included land surrounding present-day Florida City and Key Biscayne Island. In 1868, wide open prairies called "the Great Prairie" were discovered east of where today's NW Third Street meets Flagler Boulevard (and north of US 41). This opened up new opportunities for settlement west of Interstate 95; this region became known as "The Gables". In 1872, Jno Cockerill bought 2 acres southeast of present-day NW Third Street from Capt. George Rogers Clark for $5 per acre (which equals $ ). He named it "Cockrell's Prairie." In 1876 he donated this acreage to the city for public use as a parkland with tennis courts, a well, and an orchard/garden complex known as Cockrell Park today. After years of planning and fundraising by civic leaders including Mayor John Penders and Commissioners John Fitzpatrick and John Fleming Smyth Jr., construction began on Pensacola Bay Bridge across Pensacola Bay on December 5th, 1898 (one year after Pensacola had been acquired by Miami). The bridge connected downtown Pensacola with beachfront property immediately south of State Road 90A/US 41 between Oneida Avenue and NW First Street; much later it was renamed Pinellas Boulevard/Broadwalk following annexation by Tampa Bay through referendum ordinance passed November 3rd 1912 – making Florida City one of two cities in Tampa Bay (along with St Petersburg) to be annexed via referendum ordinance into that cityhood!
