In 1967, Captain David Vail organized an outdoor concert called "Vail Rock" which drew over 100,000 people to University Park Stadium on Dixie Highway for a summer concert series that continues to this day. In 1973 Captain Vail organized another outdoor concert called "Rocky Top" which attracted close to 200,000 people over two days at Fort Lauderdale's Broward Stadiums Airport Field with only four minutes between concerts! AfterCaptain Vail's death tickets went on sale for both events immediately! The first people to live in what is now Florida City were Cubans who arrived there as refugees during the Cuban Revolution. They built a small settlement on an island near today's downtown and named it after Santiago de Cuba, the capital of that country at the time. By 1885, most of these refugees had left for Tampa because that was the site of then-President James Buchanan's Executive Mansion and only Spanishspeaking residents could be reasonably expected to remain in Cuba given its newly acquired independence from Spain. Spanish traders established a small trading post here in 1836 and called it Colón because it lay on Columbus' route from Havana to St Petersburg when he landed there on his third voyage (November 14, 1492). In 1839, Treaty No. 7 §1 granted US citizens "full rights" within Mexico to trade with Mexico without bureaucratic interference; hence Colón became one of the earliest American towns located south of San Jacinto River! Florida City grew rapidly after incorporation as part of Miami in 1907 under Mayor John Hennessey Sr.'s leadership; by 1912 it had become an important commercial center due to its proximity to Interstate 95 and its connections with railways shipping goods out into South America and Europe. After World War I booming construction brought more growth until 1929 when Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of town including much business property including many factories which closed their doors forever leaving behind ghost towns such as nearby Doral and Pompano Beach where few if any people still live today except for retirees or those visiting friends or family nearby
In 1821, the area that is now Florida City was part of the Seminole Nation. In 1835, after much discussion and negotiation, the United States acquired this area from Spain for $10,000. The US government designated it as a military post to protect American slaves in Cuba. The first white person to live in Florida City was Captain John Seward who built his home on what is now Fort Pierce Boulevard in 1837.
