He named it "Escobar Island", later shortened to "Escobar" and then "Florida". In 1830 he sold most of his holdings to Moses Levy for $5,000 (). Levy named it "Miami". On July 4th, 1835 Escobar--now a U S citizen--drove four horses and wagonloads of supplies into Miami from Santiago de Cuba overland on horseback and set up camp on what is now Flagler Street near Wynwood Avenue (then known as Indian Key) across from today's Marlins Park baseball stadium which he had developed with his Cuban partner José María López Rivera. On October 25th Mexican President Antonio Díaz arrived in Miami on a campaign trip seeking recognition for Mexico under US law as an independent country when he learned about Escobar's presence; Diaz ordered Escobar killed or captured so that evidence could be destroyed incriminating him before returning home unharmed to Havana where proceedings against him would begin within weeks. The event remains controversial and has been cited by some historians as one of Americas most significant diplomatic failures ever leading directly to American annexation of Mexico following its independence from Spain On December 21st 1840 Juana Pérez married her brother Francisco Pérez y Cisneros at Our Lady Of The Assumption Church northeast corner First Street & Flagler Street opposite todayMarlins Park Stadium; this wedding marks beginning formal Mexican rule over parts adjacent north/west side along Flagler St., south/east side including much later Kendall Ave., plus numerous other sites east & west boundary line established during subsequent years by virtue onlyof officials actions without any legal sanction whatever
