Fernandina Beach is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 26,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Fernandina Beach is located on the southern tip of Key Biscayne Peninsula. The first permanent European settlers in Fernandina Beach were Frenchmen who arrived in 1795 and named it after Antoine de la Penailles, Count of Floride. The original town site was located on present-day First Street off Government Road (now Fourth Street) and consisted of only a few homes and a ferry landing for transportation to nearby Windermere Island for fishing and hunting trips. In 1868, General James Kenedy built Fort Walton Beach on what is now Second Avenue in Fernandina Beach to protect his holdings along the key bayshore from Spanish pirates operating out of Havana Bay. In 1869 Flagler bought land adjacent to Kenedy's fortifications and founded an agricultural community that became known as Flagler City although most residents continued to call themselves "Fernandina Beaches." In 1892, John Hylan purchased 7 miles (11 km) of beachfront property between Government Road (now First Street) and Third Avenue from settlement founder George Aiken for $1 million dollars plus interest payments over 20 years which he used to build the world's first planned vacation resort - Hylan Isle - now known as Hialeah Park Resort & Casino. After several years of construction work by local volunteers, including dredging its own harbor inside an artificial reef created by filling up mangroves near Grassy Key with sandbags and piling them high, Hylan's dream come true opened to guests on July 4th, 1896—the very same day that America gained independence from Spain! This new resort quickly became one of Americas busiest tourism destinations with more than 2 million visitors annually during its heyday which ended in 1923 when Prohibition made gambling illegal throughout most of America; however, FenerninaBeach remained one of Americas premier vacation destinations until then! Today Fernandina Beach remains a popular tourist destination with many attractions such as shopping malls,, golf courses,, casinos,,and luxury villas just minutes away by car or bus from downtown Miami!
