In 1802, Lieutenant John Smith discovered land to the north-west of Fernandina Bay and named it Saint Petersburg after Russian Emperor Peter I (1762-1825). A courthouse was built in 1824 by Jno. Bogue with brick work done by prisoners working for him at Malabar Plantation as an example of American slave labor during this time period. After several years it burned down in 1827 while being used as a jail and what remains today are the ruins of what once stood on this site
