In 1978-1979, operation of both papers were combined under one ownership group and then sold to another group who still operates them today as separate publications with similar editorial content but different mastheads (e.g., "The Daily Review" vs."The Sun"). From 1903-1969 there were no handguns manufactured or imported into Fernandina Beach; however, rifle/shotgun ammunition produced here continued to be exported for sale outside of Florida until 1971 when all rifles and shotguns were banned statewide due to public safety concerns following the shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado Springs. After being banned statewide all rifles/shotguns were allowed back into circulation starting 1984 through individual dealers only!

Upon landfall he named it San Salvador because he considered it to be God’s gift to him as part of Caracol (now Xalapa). The area that now includes Fernandina Beach was originally part of San Salvador Parish until 1837 when it became part of Stonington County under Governor Francois Landavert. At that time there were only a few scattered villages along what are now Soquel Avenue and SE 2nd Street between Laguna Road and present day Causeway Boulevard (the old name given to US 6). Captain Legazpi's colony would ultimately fail due to disease, lack of resources, Indian hostility, hurricane damage during their initial construction efforts as well as competition from Spanish settlers who had arrived shortly before him seeking land near Manila Bay where they could build ships for trading purposes rather than exploration or colonization ventures outside their own countrymen’s boundaries! Some 19 years later anotherSpanish captain named Hernando De Soto discovered Biscayne Bay which led eventually to discoveries throughout Florida including Tampa Bay by George Snively in 1668 AD followed by John Indiaman captained by Privateer John Smith which landed at Fort Myers in 1738 AD!! This gave rise to speculation that Santa Fe Key may have been connected directly or indirectly with Cuba via these same waterways!! The failed attempt at colonization did not stop other Spaniards from trying again subsequent centuries however !! Today many descendants still live within easy driving distance/visibilityof Ft Myers/Sanibel Island
Fernandina Beach was founded by Fernandina Islander, a slave in 1775. In 1821, it became part of the United States and was named for General Andrew Jackson. The first post office here opened in 1825. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century, thanks to its position on Florida's Gulf Coast and its access to railroad transportation. It experienced a significant growth spurt in the early 20th century as many people who had come to work on the nearby phosphate mines moved into Fernandina Beach. The town reached a peak population size of about 30,000 in 1921 but then began to decline due to various factors including World War I and subsequent economic depressed times. By 1930, Fernandina Beach had shrunk to fewer than 10,000 residents.
