Fernandina Beach is a small town in the state of Florida, located on the Gulf Coast. The town was founded in 1892 by Fernandina Beach residents who moved from Key West. Fernandina Beach became an incorporated municipality in 1907 and an unincorporated community in 1945. The population of Fernandina Beach was 9,811 as of the 2010 census. The history of Fernandina Beach can be traced back to 1892 when a group of fishermen, led by Captain William Hoddle, sailed up the Gulf of Mexico and discovered what would become Fernandina Beach. The name “Fernandina” came from the Spanish word for “Island at Sea” and it was given to them because they found no other island nearby that could support such a large settlement. The first permanent settlers arrived in1892 and began building their homes on either side of the harbor mouth. By 1915, most of these original settlers had died or moved away, but their children continued to live here until after World War II when it became difficult to find work due to lack of transportation along the coastlines. During World War I, many soldiers were stationed at Fort Myers Naval Base; many local businesses were set up to help provide food and desert rations for them while they were deployed overseas. As a result, much development took place around Fort Myers during this time period including new housing developments (such as Olivette), a movie theater (the Coconut Grove Theater), various stores (including G&W grocery store) and even a prison camp! In 1947, following passage through Congress by then-Governor John Fenton which renounced all secretarial powers held by federal employees within state borders`, all government jobs were turned over to state employees without any further compensation or benefits! This event marked an end to any vestige of local autonomy within Florida! As part as partaking equally in this changeover process – both individual citizens and municipal governments alike – each municipality made sure its own affairs remained fully functional until finally being absorbed into the larger entity only two years later!
