It grew rapidly until it reached its peak development around 1900 when over half a million people lived there and it had an estimated $30 million worth of assets. However, by 1930 Fernandina Beach's economic fortunes had collapsed and only about 650 residents remained after it lost its key industries to other communities in Palm City andJacksonville. However, despite its economic difficulties, Fernandina Beach managed to maintain some semblance of cultural life for many years afterwards through various organizations such as the Players Club which supported theater productions and social events throughout the year; and then also through several masonic Lodges which provided a place where young men could learn Masonic skills while living close by without breaking contact with their families. These activities eventually led to renewed interest in Fernandoia beach starting in the late 1980s when developer John Wessel became interested in redeveloping it into an international resort city complete with casinos and luxury properties including one that would be larger than any ever built in America at that time. In 2007 Wessel sold his share of the city to businessman Aubrey McClendon who has since made significant improvements to both what he called "the waterfront gem" - making much needed repairs to local pier deterioration caused by Hurricane Katrina - as well as developing new attractions like a theme park called Atlantis World which will include two amusement parks, water parks,and golf courses inside an all-encompassing complex measuring almost 400 acres (160 hectares).
