The Town saw heavy damage with only a few homes damaged or destroyed. Despite this much damage and loss, residents rallied together to help rebuild the town as quickly as possible. Much credit goes to Mayor Toni Battle who personally spearheaded efforts to return businesses and infrastructure inside of what had been devastated by Hurricane Flora. Over time, many new businesses have come into existence in Fernandina beach such as Aptakiskey’s Italian Kitchen and seafood restaurant called Gulfstream Seafood out of Babylon Marina which has become one of the most popular anchors for local fishing fleets throughout the season due to its excellent catches of fish! Fernandina also boasts some great shopping opportunities with several high-end boutiques dotting downtown streets such as Macy’s Department Store (now JCPenney) and Sears Department Store which were both badly damaged during Hurricane Flora! It should also be noted that there are now several fine restaurants within minutes’ walk or drive OF downtown Fernandina Beach making it easy for locals and visitors alike to enjoy fantastic local cuisine without leaving town! In recent years there have been numerous renovations taking place within downtown FernandINA BEACH including two large tower buildings housing multiplexes (MGM/Paramount Theatre & Regal Cinemas), as well as a new library that has replaced an old structure adjacent to Broadway Drive Mall! This annexation made Fortuna Key an official county seat but it reverted to Plantation Key’s old name after only two years whenbroward county merged with Miami-Dade County
