A year later in 1769 Captain James Cook sailed by and named it after his patron saint, Marie-Thérèse d'Angoulême, who had died two years earlier at age sixteen in India. Until 1821 Fernandina beach was part of Indian Pass where entire island passed under US jurisdiction. In 1821 Congress passed an act admitting Florida as a state and giving its citizens - including those living in Indian Pass - just one day's notice before their land became public property subject to sale or auction at any time without compensation to those who owned it prior to that date. In 1827 Thomas Wright built what would become the first permanent white settlement on Fernandina Beach with twelve settlers from Liverpool, England who came ashore during hurricane season in 1828/9 following fears they would be lost if they stayed aboard ship during such weather events. By 1830 most of these English colonists had either bought or inherited land elsewhere within Florida or were returning home after serving out their terms in Seminole Wars against Spanish forces near Tampa Bay. Fernandina became an incorporated town on April 15th, 1889 having been petitioned for by citizens throughout the region concerned over pollution from nearby Pensacola Naval Air Station (PNAS) which then operated out of NAS Santa Rosa across Mobile Bay making much noise and smoggy conditions typical during off-season operations offshore! On February 14th 1912 USS Maine grounding near low tide resulted in loss of life including 19 enlisted men from USS Maine boarding HMCS Chicoutimi looking for survivors after collision off Cape Canaveral fueled by oil smugglers enroute from Cuba with tanker SS Anchorage bound for Havana; both ships were sunk resulting some 259 souls lost + crew plus many more injured!
