In 1842, a group of white men explored the area and found land that would become Fernandina Beach. They named the beach after General Hernando de Soto, who had discovered Florida in 1513. Firearms were not widely used until the late 1800s when they began to be developed for hunting big game animals such as deer and bear. A rifle was created in 1859 by Ole Kirkland from a design he submitted to the American Rifle Company. The inauguration of Mayor James Moseley marked the beginning of a municipally-led growth process that has seen Fernandina grow from its modest beginnings to become one of the most vibrant communities in south Florida – home to more than 12,000 residents today and an economic powerhouse serving both Miami-Dade County and satellite counties throughout southern Broward and Palm Beach Counties.
