However, restoration efforts have revived the community over the past few years and it now has a thriving economy based largely on tourism and commuting to nearby jobs in Orange County and Osceola County. In addition to its core tourist attractions - including Sebastian Key Lighthouse (the oldest active lighthouse in Florida), Point lauderland State Park with its Bike Path and wide open range of beaches - Fernandina also features several smaller neighborhoods including Manatee Bay Boulevard & Causeway Club which offer unique opportunities for shopping and dining; as well as Garrison Town Center which includes an indoor/outdoor waterpark as well as several major retailers such as Sears, JCPenney, Macy's etc., all within walking distance of each other!

The area around where Fernandina Beach sits now was once home to several cultures including the Arawaks who inhabited what is now Sarasota County before moving westward in search of new land in the 15th century AD; the Cusco culture lived here during Preclassic times; early Spanish explorers discovered this area in 1539 when they landed on Santa Rosa Island; after arriving here, Alonso de Escobar named this part of Tampa Bay San Fernando de la Vega y los Keyes after his patron saint, Fernando de la Vega y Rodríguez; Captain John Smith discovered Fort Myers three days ago off Cape Canaveral on November 10th 1609 while exploring along Florida's east coast as part of his ill-fated attempt to find a route to India Ocean through present day Central America
Fernandina Beach was founded in 1868 by James D. Fernandina and his family. The town quickly grew, becoming a major trade center for the area. The first school was built in 1869, and the first post office opened in 1870. In 1876, Fernandina became an official city of Florida. In 1916, Fernandina Beach was renamed after Brigadier General John J. Pershing, who had played a significant role in World War I and the American Revolution.
