Eustis, Florida is a small town located in Leon County, Florida. The population was 8,827 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Boca Raton metropolitan area. Eustis is known for its seafood and wine industries. The first humans to live in Eustis arrived in the early 1800s. They were farmers who grew corn, beans, and other crops. By 1830, there were also some settlers who had moved from Georgia. They built a cabin on the banks of the St Johns River. In 1845, one of these settlers named George Eustis purchased land east of town and founded what would become Eustis Township. He put up a log cabin and named it "Eustis". In 1893, John Fenton bought property northeast of town and started growing cotton. He named his plantation "Fenton". When he died in 1902, his son took over his plantation and continued to grow cotton until 1954 when it was sold to General Motors Corporation. GM then developed it into a manufacturing plant that produced cars and trucks during World War II (1939-1945). After the war ended, GM pulled out of Florida but kept parts of the plant here as an exhibit called "Gulfstream Park" which now houses several museums including Ford Motor Company Museum (2006) The post-war years were tough for many towns in southernFlorida due to increased gas prices caused by oil drilling operations everywhere else in America . So much so that many small towns throughout Floridas declined offers from larger cities for annexation into their municipalities because they could not afford to increase their taxes even though they wanted to join cities with more expensive schools or libraries or more powerful fire departments etcetera etcetera .... This led to two things; firstly an exodus of young people from smaller towns towards larger metros where opportunities awaited them; secondly an overall decline in economic activity within those towns as fewer people made money off agriculture or manufacturing anymore

Eustis, Florida is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It became part of the Seminole Nation in 1835. The first white European to set foot in what is now Eustis was Captain John Smith, who explored and charted the east coast of Florida on his 15-day trip from Pensacola to Tallahassee on October 22, 1788. He named it "Eustis" after Sir Walter Raleigh's fortified estate in England which he had visited two weeks earlier. In 1827, General James K. Polk traveled through that area en route to becoming president of the United States and discovered this region when his forces invaded Cuba during the Bay of Pigs War. Upon their return home they recommended that Congress establish a military post here known as Fort Brooke just south of town on Raccoon Key where they could control access to Tampa Bay for naval operations without having to cross Tampa Strait. The post was ultimately established as Fort Brooke near present-day Eustis on December 12, 1827 under Lieutenant Colonel James Hinchcliffe (1793-1868). It wasn't until 1840 that Governor William Troup authorized construction of a wharf at Raccoon Key withembarkation facilities for ferrying goods between Tampa and cape Canaveral/Clearwater beaches across Tampa Bay before international trade took hold and transportation became more important than land transport throughout much of North America during this time period; however due to safety concerns about navigable waterways being accessible by vessels larger than small boats along with salt water fouling upnavigability some maritime shipping did not call at Raccoon Key until after 1850 according to local historian Don Newberry who also notes that freight rates were deliberately high becauseCaptain David Porter decided not to risk getting lost trying to navigate a salt water crossing while sailing from Havana Cuba back into Spanish America) . After years of development work by entrepreneurs such as Wm Fenton (founder of Fenton Brewing Company), Jno Pemberton (founder of Jacksonville Landing), Akins Vineyards & Winery and other businessmen in what would become known as "The Gilded Age," Eustis began receiving attention as an upstart community located within easy commuting distance for both wealthy southern Floridians looking for sunnier climates outside Miami Beach or Jacksonville Gainesville beach bureaus but also northern capitalists drawn by its growing tobacco industry whose fields now adjoin Raccoon Keys - one tobacco farmer even building an entire house next door on Dune Road originally designed for use as his plantation office! By 1870s over 60%ofthe workforce here were hired directly out there farms! After prohibitionighthouse built here in 1915 resultedin virtuallyno tourist visitation it revertedtojusta fishing village until 1980 when new state capital Orlando moved HEREfrom TallahasseedueonthefactthatEUSTISwasthenFlorida's only major city stillservingapublic servant role intothe State government thru county government servicesdespitegrowingcities likeOrlandoandMiami

During the 1940s Eustis experienced a period of rapid population growth due to World War II recruiting drives; however, during the post-war years growth halted as jobs moved away from Eustis to Miami and elsewhere. In recent decades Eustis has regained some lost growth rate thanks to its role as an important shopping destination for the region.
