The city was founded by Major General James Eustis on December 12, 1855 as Fort Eustis after he and his troops destroyed a Seminole Indian village near present-day Port St Lucie. A post office called Eustis was established in 1857, and remained open until 1925. The first white settler in the area was John Pritchard who arrived in 1859. In 1870 Dr. George Huggins organized what became Good Samaritan Hospital which opened its doors to patients on November 25th of that year. After Hurricane Andrew made landfall on September 20, 1992 as a Category 4 storm, much force damage had been done throughout the county but no loss of life occurred as such; however many homes were destroyed or heavily damaged with extensive flooding common due to water levels reaching over . Eustis is a city in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Tampa Combined Statistical Area. Eustis was founded by English colonists in 1847 as Orange Island and named for General Andrew Jackson. The first permanent settler in what would become Eustis was Captain John Smith who landed on nearby Santa Rosa Island on December 7, 1847. The town's name was changed to Orange Island after General Andrew Jackson's visit to the island on May 6, 1848. In 1850, the U.S. Army established Fort Union at present-day Eustis after military operations against Seminole Indians had destroyed their village of Fort Walton Beach on Santa Rosa Island. In 1852, a post office called "Eustis" opened under the name of Orangeburg County Courthouse because no one wanted to move from their home near Jacksonville because they were scared that they would lose their property rights if Congress passed a bill creating a new county east of Cape Canaveral Bay without them. In 1861, Confederate forces burned down most of downtown Eustis during an attack on Union troops stationed there by Confederate Lt.-General Stonewall Jackson; only about 150 people escaped alive when burning began immediately outside the courthouse doors and continued until morning despite orders from brigade commanders to stop it.
