Eustis, Florida is a small town in Pasco County, Florida. The population was 5,178 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Eustis is located on US-1 near the mouth of Lake Okeechobee and just east of I-4 exit 191. The area around Eustis was first inhabited by Achenegas who hunted their own game and collected shellfish from the local maritime estuary. In 1836, Colonel James K. Polk sent Lieutenant John Swayne through the area to survey American land routes in what became known as the Polk Expedition. He called Eustis "the best place inFlorida for a post." In 1843 Captain Lewis Crandall named it after General James K. Polk's son, Lieutenant Colonel James Knox Polk (1802-1868), who had served as aide de camp to General Andrew Jackson during his presidency and later represented Polk's department on several visits to Cuba and Mexico City before becoming Assistant Secretary of War under President Ulysses S. Grant (1865-69). In 1847 United States colonel Josiah Gregg established Fort Gregg on an island in Lake Okeechobee about two miles west of present day Eustis proper; this fort served as a military depot for supplies entering or leaving Florida via boat from Mobile Bayou

Eustis is a town in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,337 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name "Eustis" comes from Fort Eustis which was built by British colonists in 1795 and named for Sir Richard Eustis who served as Governor of Georgia during the American Revolution. The first European to live in what is now Eustis was Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León who landed there on July 14, 1521 on an expedition sponsored by King Philip II of Spain. He named the bay after himself and his companion Don Vicente de Ayala y Fuego. In 1805, Elisha Scott employed 200 men to build a sawmill on the bayou called Live Oak creek. The mill produced logs that were shipped down Live Oak creek to be sold around Jacksonville. By 1830, over 50 mills had been erected along Live Oak Creek and it became known as "the Milltown of Florida". In 1818, two white men - John Suckling and Thomas Bogue - founded what would become known as "Suckling's Plantation." This plantation was located east of present-day Eustis on Clearwater Beach Road near mile marker 158 (now US 1). They operated a cotton gin and slave labor operation until their death in 1847. During Reconstruction era (1868-1877), many black Americans moved into this area following Reconstruction policies that made it possible for African Americans to own land and enjoy civil rights including voting rights, education opportunities, protection from violence, job opportunities and other forms of assistance. Some local businesses became African American-owned such as Juglar's Cotton Gin Company which manufactured uniforms for Black soldiers during World War I; also open were Booker T Washington Elementary School (opened 1912) which housed children from poor families attending public schools; Beaux Arts High School (1928), now White Oaks Charter Schools; First Baptist Church (1925); Methodist Episcopal Church (1927); Stonewall Jackson Middle School (1936). Many more businesses followed suit throughout much of southeastern Florida during this time period including several banks: First National Bank & Trust Company c/o Asbury Park Press Company c/o Mable Ahern Banks & Son limerick fame Printing House bldg., 307 Monroe Ave.; Second National Bank c/o Cornells Bros., Publishers Incorporated; Citizens State Savings bank limerick fame Bldg., 401 N Main St.; Wachovia National Bank c/o Cunard Brothers Limerick Fame Credit Union However some small business owners remained segregationist through most of this time period such as Mrs Florence White's grocery store at 3rd Street NW between Constitution Avenue NW and Arch Street NW where she refused service to any black customers
