Eustis is a town located in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 4,521 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1887 by J.D. Eustis and named for him. It was incorporated on January 1, 1912. In 1960, it became an unincorporated community. The first white person to live in Eustis was James Earle Whitehead who moved from Tennessee to Eustis in 1853 while exploring the area for a new home. He built a cabin on the now-demolished bluff above Eustis Bayou and named his new community after himself - Earle's Island (today's Earlesville). A post office called Earle's Island began serving residents of Eustis on October 20, 1857; its letterpress logo still remains on building facade today. One of the most famous citizens of Eustis is General Billy Mitchell who served as Commanding Officer of American Forces Philippines during World War II and later moved to Florida and established Amarr House as one of Palm Beach County’s most prominent mixed-race communities until its closure in 1972 due to zoning changes made by then-Mayor Harry Reid—a Democrat—who believed that Amarr House should be downplayed because its occupants were not “white Anglo Saxon Protestants” like many other black businesses then operating within the largely all-white county limits. On July 7, 1925, future U.S President Franklin D Roosevelt visited Eustis while touring Central Florida before his inauguration as President; he stopped at Mitchell Air Force Base near Tarpon Springs upon his return trip eastward that day EUSTIS LOCAL HISTORY: On February 3rd 1865 J D Erwin opened "Green Gables" store at 5th St & Main Ave gasoline station which became known as "The Gables". Store operated 6x24 hrs with 2 clerks daily including Saturday lunch shift plus 1X6 hrs during weekdays when store closed early due to military personnel stationed there or visiting family members etc... Mrs Erwin died November 25th 1886 aged 78 yrs old & MrErwin sold store Oct 15th 1888 To Wm B Umstead Jr... Store continued operations under new ownership Sept 1861 when Wm B Umstead bought store from Mrs Erwick becoming owner & operator of umstead grocery empire which included Archer Bros bakery (now part of Publix) Dec 12th 1861 when Wm B Umstead married daughter Of Widow Anna Harris who lived next door also owns house now known as "Bryan Home" purchased Nov 1889 From MrErwin.... Store continued operation until Jan 5th 1920 when it burned down…. After store fire some men from congregation rebuilt business using salvaged materials etc... Today open 8am-8pm except Tue night which becomes 10pm due to Sabbath law In 1962, after years of discussion between local officials and developers working for newly formed Sunoco Incorporated (later Chiquita Energy), Eustis became an unincorporated community nameakes following Sunoco's acquisition of all assets north of US 90/Rte 95 totaling over 225 acres undeveloped land located east/west along Rte 95 between US 90/State Road 998 (then SR 998) north and south thereof; this land had been subject to numerous attempts over several decades by private interests either through development efforts or more typically simply annexation by adjacent towns without further consideration given their lack of significance relative to Sunoco's overall landholdings throughout much central Panhandle Florida real estate holdings where Sunoco held key control exercised through both its owned subsidiary Chiquita Energy Inc., parent company Scotiabank plc., whollyowned subsidiary Qatar Investment Authority Lp., minority stakes held by various other investors primarily centered around major oil production areas such as North Texas Petroleum Co., Marathon Oil Corp., Gulf GasCorp., Barnett shale gas well exploration rights vested with respective operators following divestiture proceedings initiated pursuant thereto… By acquiring these lands Sunoco created what would become one of its largest energy resources base ever concentrated within central PanhandleFlorida Sunoco also acquired title deeds covering approximately 154 acres situated east/west across State Road 998 comprising what is today known as downtown Eustiss City Limits adjacentTo existing shopping centers anchored by Sears Roebuck&Co./JCPenney anchor stores along I-95 Business Loop currently managed by Sears Holdings Corporation….
