Eustis is a small town located in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Eustis is known for its citrus crops and seafood. The first Europeans to visit Eustis were Spanish traders who landed there in 1565 on the island of St Augustine. The area that now makes up Eustis was originally inhabited by Seminole Indians. In 1763, during the French and Indian War, British General John Sevier burned down a trading post near present day Eustis after discovering it was being used as a base of operations by Native Americans hostile to the British effort to gain territory in North America. In 1821, Captain Fenton Noble founded Fort Nome on an estuary at what is now called Water Street in downtown Eustis after finding gold coins hidden among citrus trees near his plantation house. Gold fever struck Florida during this time and many settlers left for California with their herds of livestock, but Fenton remained behind to explore new land and find more gold mines; he eventually became one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Florida history with his Nome Plantation Company becoming one of the largest landholders in Southwest Florida before selling it all in 1848 to state legislator James Swayne for $10 million dollars.
