Eustis, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,971 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. The townsite was first settled by German settlers in 1825. A post office called Eustis was established in 1828 and remained in operation until 1914. The name "Eustis" comes from the Miami-Hernando language word "uta". In 1893, a group of lumberjacks camped on what is now Eustis Island for two weeks to rest during their trip downriver from Cedar Key. They named their island after General James Wilkinson Ewell's headquarters at Foley Landing on Lake Okeechobee). In 1895, businessman Wm. Hargrave donated land to establish a school district which would house six schools and provide instruction to students from pre-kindergarten through high school. On November 2, 1896, the first school class graduated from Mount Carmel School with Mr. Hargrave as Principal; Mrs. Gertrude Keefer as Teacher and 10 children including future Governor of Florida William Hill (1896-1902). By 1898 there were 12 primary grades and 6 elementary grades with one teacher per grade level; also available were 2 gymnasiums/multipurpose rooms (for band/ chorus play or other purposes) and 3 tennis courts! Two years later additional classrooms were added when First Presbyterian Church was built on State Road 7A off US Highway 441 east of town near present day Old US Highway 192 (SR 191), just south of SR 192's intersection with SR 7A (now CR 192). On December 22nd 1899 an act was passed by the state legislature authorizing erection of a public building on lot 17 comprising about 60 acres adjoining lot 16 within the limits aforesaid for use for educational purposes only without further appropriation thereof by the Legislature; this building became known as Hillsborough Hall & High School resulting from an amendment made thereto February 25th 1902 by Act No., No., 694 which provided that it should be known as Hillsborough Hall & High School District #2 hereafter! Classes began September 14th 1902 under Miss Florence King – booker & first female educator in Seminole County! At that time enrollment increased to 30 pupils total plus 5 teachers! In 1903 new brick buildings replaced former log buildings used for instructional purposes only! As enrollment grew so too did facilities needs; second brick building erected in 1904 included separate science laboratories & library w/ceiling fans etc.; third brick building erected 1928 included Nursery Department!, Home Economics Dept., Physical Education Dept.,still today home to WWLP 91FM morning show! The original campus site includes: Main Street NW corner Government House NE corner Academy Avenue NW quarter mile east of US 441 between SR 191&SR 7A

Eustis is the fifth-largest city in Florida and it is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Santa Rosa metropolitan area. The first Europeans to settle in what became Eustis were Spaniards who explored and charted the coast of Florida in 1565. In 1821, Englishman John Houstoun established a steamboat dock on Indian River Lagoon and named it after his home town of Evesham in England. A man by the name of Houstoun donated land for a courthouse, jail, and other public works near Indian River Lagoon. The town site was chosen because it was free from any natural hazards such as salt water intrusion or hurricanes that could damage homes or docks. The first buildings were erected between 1822 and 1830; they included a courthouse (1824), prison (1829), schoolhouse (1830), dockyard (1832), merchant bank (1834), Methodist Episcopal church (1835), cotton gin (1836), storehouses ( 1840-41) and wharf/shipyards ( 1842). The town's growth came about due to its location on two major shipping routes:the Stonington Steam Navigation Company's Key West Branch route which connected Tampa Bay with Jacksonville via Stonington Island;and Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Railway which linked Havana with Point Loma on Mexico City through Gainesville Junction where trains stopped for passengers to disembark at Point Loma before continuing their journey northward along Mexican soil until they reached Gainesville Junction again and crossed over into Alabama
